Wow. This weekend was a total blast from the past. Simeon and I just got back from his 10 Year High School reunion. For those of you who are new here, Simeon and I both attended Seaside High School. Simeon was a senior when I was a freshman, so I am very familiar with the people in his class. I mean, as a freshman, its imperative to know who the seniors are.
(This was Sim’s senior picture from the yearbook.)
So we timidly walked into the awaiting crowd at the Family BBQ on Friday night. Having not seen any of these people in, oh I don’t know, TEN YEARS, it was a lot to take in. But Simeon grabbed my hand and we walked into the crowd and started up conversations with all of Sim’s old classmates. At first it was all the typical small talk (what do you do, where do you live, do you have any kids, etc.) but quickly turned to tales of high school drama and “remember that one time in Mr. Hawes’ class…” and pointing out to spouses who used to date and who slept with who. Before long, it felt just like a high school party, complete with the red cups and the cops showing up.
Then on Saturday, we all dressed up and got together for a nice sit down dinner at the Seaside Elks Lodge. It was decorated like a high school dance, with floating candles in Seaside school colors and a giant balloon arch. Having gotten all the formalities out of the way the night before, everyone let down their guards and worried less about having to impress each other.
After dinner there was a classic slideshow of all the humiliating things any of them had ever done before and allowed to be caught on film. This only fueled the stories and the laughter. Then everyone discussed who changed the most, who hadn’t changed at all, who had the most children, who became a teacher/policeman/doctor, etc.
A few times during the evening, I looked around and felt like I had stepped right back into 1995. I don’t know if it was the non-alcoholic punch or the Boyz II Men and TLC playing in the background, but I kept feeling like I needed to get home in time for curfew! All I can say is the whole thing came out WAY better than I would have imagined. And now I have three years to get ready for MY 10 year reunion. This was just my practice-run after all. 😉
You can see all the pictures from the BBQ on Friday as well as the dinner on Saturday in the photo gallery. If anyone wants any of the pictures, just let me know. (Oh and I apologize for not putting titles and captions on all the pictures, but this is just easier for me. And really, do you care what their names are?? )
Ooh, I see Chris Mattocks was there. ; )
My gosh! You guys are incredibly fast! I’m barely home and you’ve got all the pics up! Thanks for the work on the class website and for taking all of these pictures!
